Short answer: before the first hard freeze (28°F or colder). On the Wasatch Front that usually means between mid-October and the first week of November, depending on your elevation and county.
2026 recommended blowout deadlines
| Area | Examples | Blow out by |
|---|---|---|
| Upper benches & foothills | Alpine, Highland, Draper, Herriman | Oct 15 (past, so book ASAP) |
| South valley | Lehi, Sandy, South Jordan, West Jordan, Riverton | Oct 31 |
| Valley floor / city core | Salt Lake City, Murray, Holladay, Millcreek, Provo | Nov 7 |
These tiers come from a widely cited local winterization guide (see sources). They're guidelines, not guarantees, because a cold front can move the real deadline up by a week.
Typical first frost by county
- Utah County: about Oct 11–20
- Salt Lake County: about Oct 21–31
A first frost on the grass isn't the same as a damaging freeze. Buried pipe is insulated by soil, but the backflow preventer sits above ground and is the most freeze-sensitive part of the system. Protect it first.
Secondary water shutoffs (2026)
- Riverton: secondary typically runs to about Oct 15.
- South Jordan: tentative shutoff Oct 15, 2026.
- Herriman: staged shutdown began Oct 13, 2026.
- Lehi PI: stays pressurized all year (fire hydrants). Turn off your connection by Oct 15.
Once secondary water is off you can't water anyway, so that's the natural time to book. Remember that the district shutting off does not drain the water in your own pipes.
What if it freezes before my blowout?
- Don't run the sprinklers.
- Close your irrigation shutoff valve if you know where it is.
- If the backflow preventer is exposed, wrap it with an insulating cover or towel as a short-term measure.
- Get the blowout done at the next opportunity. One cold night rarely does the damage. Repeated hard freezes with water trapped in the system do.
Why not just wait?
Local providers say they "fill up fast in late October and early November before the first hard freeze." Freeze repairs typically run $250–$750, and replacing a stop-and-waste valve can cost $1,600–$2,600. A 6-zone blowout with us is $90, paid when the job is done.
Quick answers
When should I blow out my sprinklers in Utah in 2026?
Before the first hard freeze: upper benches by about Oct 15, the south valley by Oct 31 and valley-floor homes in SLC, Murray and Provo by about Nov 7.
Is it too late to winterize sprinklers in November?
Not necessarily. If you're on the valley floor and a long hard freeze hasn't hit, book immediately and keep the system off until then.
